Jean Améry was a secular Jew, resistance fighter, concentration camp survivor and author. Since 7 October 2023, his theories on antisemitism have once again become highly topical. Since Améry’s descriptions of torture, the loss of dignity, “trust in the world” and homeland, and the terms “ressentiment”, “catastrophe Jew” and “being Jewish” resemble the current suffering of many (left-wing) Jews, this article examines their perspective based on his work. In the next issue of MEDAON, Améry’s theories will also be used in an analysis of the “Black Sabbath” and the global escalation of antisemitism.
