The article is based on the thesis that present-day historiography strengthens the notion of a Jewish – non-Jewish dichotomy. An exploration of Jews in Viennese popular culture enables such polarizing categorizations to be avoided. Any difficulties to determine Jewishness can be solved by the application of Jewish difference as an analytical tool.
